John Eddy Hutchins (1891-1973) was a noted American painter whose oils and watercolors encompassed a diverse array of styles and genres, earning him critical respect and praise during his lifetime.

Born in Pennsylvania, Hutchins received his formal education in art at the venerable Art Students League in New York City. His work was chosen for representation at such prestigious venues as the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, with the latter purchasing one of his paintings for their highly selective permanent collection. A frequent visitor to Bermuda, Hutchins' arrival on the island in November 1923 was chronicled by the Royal Gazette newspaper, which favorably reviewed the exhibitions held in Paget by the “well known artist from America” in February and March 1934, lauding Hutchins’ “original” painterly point of view. During this time period, one of Hutchins’ paintings was featured prominently in the lobby of the newly-opened Bermudiana Hotel. In 1935, the culturally iconic New Yorker magazine, in its weekly “Goings On” column of worthwhile events, recommended that its readers visit the Montross Gallery on East 56th Street and view Hutchins’ then-current display, citing the exhibit as “the watercolors of a young man who paints very well.” Hutchins also exhibited at the progressive Society of Independent Artists, whose founders included Marcel Duchamp, Albert Gleizes, John Marin, Man Ray, John Sloan, and William Glackens.

John Eddy Hutchins’ died in 1973 at the age of 92, his career paralleling and reflecting a mastery of the major artistic movements of the twentieth century.
