On March 22, 1947, Pan American Airways started regular service to Bermuda from Washington DC and Boston. These cities had previously been used only as bad weather alternates or occasional refueling stops.

This service via Bermuda was inaugurated under a Civil Aeronautics Board certificate which later was temporarily revoked as “inadvertently issued.” Service from Boston to Bermuda was reinstated December 30, 1948.

No cachet was provided or first flight covers.

The cover was one of only 121 pieces of mail carried on the inaugural Pan Am flight from Boston, Massachusetts to Hamilton, Bermuda (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Foreign Air Mail Flights (FAM) section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as F18-60b.
