Two original Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) Photographs

5,000.00

Two snapshot original photographs taken and printed in Bermuda of Mark Twain by N.E. Lusher, one with his secretary Isabel Lyon, and the second with him smoking a cigar wearing a bowler hat, likely at the bottom of Burnaby Hill (at the junction with Front Street in Hamilton). The second was taken right next to the studio of N.E. Lusher, Photographer, with the photographer’s sign depicted in the upper right hand corner. The specific site of the photo with Isabel Lyon is not known but is also taken in Bermuda, likely in the Pitt’s Bay area.
Accompanying the two photographs is the original red-colored Lusher Photography envelope, which has “From N.E. Lusher and Sun Photographers and Stock Supply Company York Building, Queen Street Hamilton, Bermuda” printed in the upper left hand corner, and has “Miss Lyon” (the name of Twain’s secretary who is pictured with Twain) handwritten on the center of the envelope, as well as “4 prints 3 1/4 x 5 1/2" written in the same hand in the upper right hand corner.

The contact prints measure 4 by 6 inches, but image is 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches. One of the photographs has a note by Lyon in pencil, “Send one to Chappie 623 University Street."
